Over time, it has expanded all across the United States with support from nearly 450 manufacturers. The FAME program is like an apprenticeship on steroids. FAME students spend two full days each week at school and the other three days working for one of the program’s manufacturing sponsors. It’s a rigorous program, but students absolutely love it. Each FAME chapter provides “an unparalleled apprenticeship-style training program where participants earn while they learn, gaining top-tier technical expertise by integrating core manufacturing competencies, professional practices, and authentic hands-on experience.” What sets the FAME program apart is the fact that its “unique earn-and-learn model blends technical training with real-world projects, both on the job and in the classroom.” Students “develop core manufacturing skills alongside critical professional behaviors such as teamwork, communication, initiative, and problem-solving.” That’s where Amatrol comes in. For example, Conner Bartos, a machinist at Cimtech, tells students: “Manufacturing is a great way to become financially independent, because if you go to college, you won’t get a job for at least two to four years. With a trade, you can get a great job directly out of high school.” Launius explains that “for over ten years, One Southern Indiana, in collaboration with the Metro Manufacturing Alliance, has hosted Manufacturing Week to build an opportunity for students and industry to connect throughout the week in some really fun and authentic ways.” He adds that “when we look into the future, we see [manufacturing] as an industry that will continue to serve our region immensely, but a critical piece of that is the workforce and the next generation. There are a lot of people retiring, so we need to get as many young folks into this as possible. There’s a need for this program.” That’s why the Wayne County Schools Career Center Adult Education HVAC program represents a major investment in the future of those interested in pursuing careers in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning industry.
